Choose one Pixar short a day. There are 33 shorts attached below in the link. In a Google Doc, students will type entries in order. In each entry, students will label the watch date and title of the Pixar as well as detail the theme and characterization, citing evidence throughout to support their ideas. Each entry should be 1-2 paragraphs. Once they are done with all 33, students will attach their Google Doc and submit.

The students will use this slide as a way to creatively track their reading over the extended break. The students may complete TWO slides per ONE piece of literature. For example, they can complete two slides ONLY on Lord of the Flies (or whatever book/story/poem they choose). As an added bonus, they may complete 10 of the 45 slides on a video, movie, or tv show that they watch over the break. They can Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Disney Plus time to use ;)

These will be sent home in the packets for the students who do not have online access. I am also posting for the students on Google Classroom.

This is by far my favorite activity yet! Students have 9 cells to complete. These are so much fun! We spend the majority of our year in English II reading and discussing memoirs or historical documents such as Elie Wiesel's Night and MLK Jr.' "I Have a Dream" speech. These authors documented in real time what was occurring every single day. This is how we know our history. I am giving students an opportunity to document their own histories throughout this pandemic. I can't wait to see the submissions!

Summer Reading Assignment in Google Classroom

Summer Reading Assignment

Your summer reading assignment is based on the novel Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees.

You may retrieve one of these novels from the library at LHS by the end of the school year, May 24th. DO NOT COME AFTER THIS DATE AS I WILL NOT BE HERE. After doing so, email me the # on the side of the book. If you cannot get one from the library, feel free to buy one. You can turn it in for an extra grade (awesome opportunity! You can get these books for $5 online).

Your assignment includes the following:

Paragraph One: Discuss symbolism and its presence in the book. USE EVIDENCE.
Paragraph Two: Discuss the characters and how realistic and relatable they are. USE EVIDENCE.
Paragraph Three: Discuss the recurring themes. USE EVIDENCE.
Paragraph Four: Discuss how the title works with the plot of the novel. USE EVIDENCE.
Paragraph Five: Your overall view of the book (Did you like it? Why or why not? No, it being a "summer" assignment is not a valid reason not to like it).

Form a WELL written and WELL formatted essay ON GOOGLE DOCS using MLA format. I will post a link regarding MLA information just for reference.

*****I also suggest you stay conscious of your timeline during the summer- do NOT let this slip by without giving it any thought. It is a major test grade, and you will also have a test on the book during the first week of school. Take this seriously- it sets the tone for the remainder of the year.*****
